Safety Tips for Round-Nose & Flat-Tail Long boards in Deep & Shallow Water
1. Deep Water Surfing
- Paddling Efficiency: The round noseprovides buoyancy and stability, making it easier to paddle through deep water. However, its size can catch wind—stay low to reduce resistance.
- Wave Entry: The flat tail offers smooth gliding, but it may lack sharp turns. Use wider, drawn-out carves to maintain control in larger waves.
- Current & Endurance: Longboards are heavier, so be mindful of fatigue in strong currents. Conserve energy when paddling back.
2. Shallow Water Surfing
- Fin & Tail Caution: The flat tailsits low in the water, increasing the risk of hitting the bottom in shallow zones. Avoid sharp turns near reefs or sandbanks.
- Nose Riding: The round nose is great for walking forward, but in very shallow water, stepping too far up can cause the board to pearl (nose-dive). Adjust weight carefully.
- Wave Break Awareness: Longboards generate speed quickly—anticipate sudden breaks in shallow water to avoid being thrown forward.
General Tips
Stability Advantage: The board’s length makes it steady, but its size requires more space to maneuver—watch for other surfers.
Durability Check: Long boards are tougher but can still get damaged in rocky shallows. Inspect fins and rails after surfing.
